Ranking NFL coaches by hotness of their seat
By Nick Villano
10. Jonathan Gannon – Arizona Cardinals
This is by far the lowest rookie head coach on this list. There is just a strange vibe in Arizona. Kyler Murray seems like he could miss most or all of this season. The roster might be one of the worst in the NFL, and they hired a defensive coordinator who had to fight hot-seat rumors prior to last season.
Now, Jonathan Gannon has to take a roster devoid of star players and compete in the NFC West. Not only that, but they have to face the NFC East and AFC North this season. They do get the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears since they have a last-place schedule, but that’s the only positive coming out of this. Gannon has a very low ceiling based on schedule alone.
Don’t be surprised if Gannon cannot hold this team together through trials and tribulations. Budda Baker already asked for a trade. More requests will come if the Cards can’t prove they can do better. They got nothing for DeAndre Hopkins. This is bad headline after bad headline.
Jonathan Gannon joined a dysfunctional franchise. The Cardinals gave Kliff Kingsbury and Steve Keim extensions, and then the owners eventually fired them both very early in those terms. Maybe there’s an out clause we’re not aware of, but it just seems like a major mistake. Maybe the fact that the Cardinals are still paying Kingsbury for a long time could save Gannon, but this is expected to be the worst team in football. If the Cardinals win one game, would anyone be floored if Gannon gets the boot?
