Ranking NFL coaches by hotness of their seat
By Nick Villano
6. Kevin O’Connell – Minnesota Vikings
What is the goal for Minnesota this season? Do they think this is a Super Bowl contender? It’s definitely a division contender after Aaron Rodgers left for the AFC East. However, the Vikings seem to still be missing a lot of what makes a contender. They have Kirk Cousins under center, which is fine. However, it’s literally just fine. Nothing more. The defense is quite good, but it’s not one of the best in the league. They have the best wide receiver in Justin Jefferson and pieces around him, but that is the only discernable advantage the team has over other NFC powerhouses.
It will come down to coaching to see where the Vikings go this year. Everyone has jumped on the Lions bandwagon, and that’s led to them being named the favorites in the division. That probably doesn’t work for Vikings brass, who still believe this is a contender.
This is only Kevin O’Connell’s second year as head coach of the Vikings, and he led them to the playoffs in his first season. However, they got embarrassed by the New York Giants in the first round.
O’Connell was hired to get the Vikings further than his predecessor. O’Connell definitely had the regular season success, but the playoff dud now has his seat hot. This is a volatile situation, and he can fix it pretty quickly. If he goes 4-1 to start the season, his seat will be ice-cold. If it goes the other way, his seat could be non-existent.
