Ranking NFL coaches by hotness of their seat

4. Todd Bowles – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The post-Bruce Arians era in Tampa Bay is going terribly. The Bucs barely made the playoffs in Todd Bowles’ first year in charge. It went so bad, Tom Brady retired for real. Byron Leftwich, who looked like a lockdown head coaching candidate the year prior, was fired after a bad season offensively. With major changes coming for an aging roster, Bowles has one more chance to prove he’s a quality head coach.
It might not be fair to judge him on this season. Brady retires, and now they have to replace him with Baker Mayfield. However, this offense has aging stars looking to win. Mike Evans wants to win again. Chris Godwin wants to win again. Ryan Jensen, Tristan Wirfs, and Russel Gage make up a quality offense.
The defense still has stars everywhere, and that’s Bowles bread and butter. He is a defense-first coach, so maybe the Bucs can steal this division again with quality defensive performances. That is what can save him from the unemployment line again. However, his seat is scorching hot.
If the Bucs start the season 1-3 or 2-4, expect a move to be made. Jason Licht is holding onto this GM job for dear life, so he can’t afford to make a mistake by holding onto a coach for too long. The Bucs are in a transition period, but there are still many stars on the roster. This shouldn’t be a team that misses the playoffs, but it very well might. And that spells the end of Bowles as a head coach.
