2. NY Mets rumors: Tommy Pham won’t be on the roster by July 1

Tommy Pham is a shell of the player he used to be. The Cincinnati Reds found this out the hard way last season after inking the outfielder to a one-year deal. Pham was traded to the Boston Red Sox at last year’s deadline, then signed with the New York Mets this spring.

Pham has made just over 100 plate appearances in 2023, and according to FanGraphs, has a wRC+ of 98. That’s mildly surprising considering Pham is hitting just .222/.321/.389 on the season.

Pham has maintained a good eye at the dish (10-plus percent walk-rate), but his below-average defense at age 35 would seem to signal that it’s about time to hand the former San Diego Padres slugger his walking papers.

It’s doubtful that Pham will draw much, if any, trade interest later this summer, so it may behoove the Mets front office to just cut bait before July 1st and find a way to get top prospect Ronny Mauricio into the lineup before New York falls out of contention in the NL East.
