3. NY Mets rumors: Tomas Nido won’t be on the roster by July 1

Is it finally time for the New York Mets to part ways with Tomas Nido? The veteran backup has done an adequate job of fielding his position this season, but Nido’s bat has been woeful.

Nido is hitting a meager .130 is not going to help Nido hang onto his roster spot past July 1. Neither is the imminent return of Omar Narvaez. The Mets catcher has been on the IL since the beginning of the 2023 season, but signs point to a return of the former Milwaukee Brewers backstop in the coming weeks.

It seems unlikely, at this stage of the game, that the Mets are going to carry three catchers. Francisco Alvarez has all but laid claim to the starting job behind the plate, so this may be the end of the road for Tomas Nido.

The veteran is out of options, so the New York Mets would need to DFA the 29-year-old. While defensive-minded catchers are always in high demand, his well below-average performance at the plate may allow Nido to pass through waivers and accept and assignment to the Mets Triple-A affiliate.
