What the Atlanta Braves did in their three-game home sweep of the New York Mets was nothing short of historic for the NL East franchise.

While the Atlanta Braves are feeling pure elation, the New York Mets are feeling pure agony.

Atlanta completed a three-game home sweep of its most hated rival. The Braves now have 8.5 games separating them from the Mets in the NL East race. What made this three-game series so impressive for the Braves was that for the first time in the modern era, they overcame three-run deficits to win consecutively. We can thank Ozzie Albies’ three-run walk-off bomb for this feat.

Atlanta cannot take its foot off the gas with the Washington Nationals coming to town for three.

Then, New York will have to play a surprisingly strong Pittsburgh Pirates team on the road this weekend.

One of the best parts about baseball is you get to play the next day and show us all what you got.

Atlanta Braves’ series sweep of the New York Mets was of the historic variety

Every team has ebbs and flows throughout the season. Atlanta may be hotter than Hansel right now, but there will almost certainly be a point in which Braves Country goes into full-blown panic mode about how poorly the team is performing in another stretch of games. However, this series sweep of the Mets hits different. With fewer division games now, this might have broke their will.

Look. The Mets are way too talented to be down bad for this long, but I don’t think the Braves going to fall apart down the stretch either. We also have to keep an eye on the Miami Marlins, who are quietly playing some really great baseball over the last two months and change. As for the Mets, it feels like either them or the Philadelphia Phillies could make the postseason, but not both.

Ultimately, the Mets are going to have to pick up the pieces, while the Braves are going to have to keep the momentum going. These division rivals will meet later this summer, possibly with even bigger stakes on the line. For now, Atlanta has won nine of its last 10 games against the Mets. I don’t know if that streak of dominance will continue, but I am absolutely in favor of it happening.

To pull off something historic against your bitter rival is quite the accomplishment for any team.
