2) Yankees doubters can apologize to Clay Holmes

Nobody may get more love or ridicule on the average MLB roster than the closer. Clay Holmes has experienced it all. Still flawless on the road with a 2-0 record and only 4 hits allowed in 13.1 innings pitched, Holmes had a couple of games in the Bronx which had fans questioning if he was cut out for the ninth.

A strong conclusion to April helped him escape the first month with a 3.72 ERA and 4 saves on the season. Just as the Yankees thought they could trust him again, he blew a save on the first of May and pitched another stinker two days later against the same Cleveland Guardians ball club. His ERA reached a 6.30 and opportunities to pitch in the ninth inning for save opportunities eluded him.

Holmes did finally get a save later on in May and is now 4-2 with a 2.63 ERA on the season. Wandy Peralta may continue to get save opportunities for the team as well, but Holmes has seemed invincible. He has allowed only one earned run over the last 30 days.

The love/hate relationship between fans and the team’s closer is something that’ll never go away. Certainly with Holmes, the pressure will remain on. You might want to write your apology letter in pencil.
