According to the latest NBA rumors, the Spurs want to go after a top-tier free agent point guard to pair with Victor Wembanyama this offseason

Pending the apocalypse, the Spurs will be taking Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick of the NBA draft. According to Spurs Talk, San Antonio will be looking at a hard push for Chris Paul or Fred VanVleet when free agency begins in a couple of days, hoping to find a veteran point guard who can help Wembanyama develop.

The Spurs are in a really good spot to build a team around Victor Wembanyama. They have a collection of Hawks first-round picks, the Raptors’ 2024 first-rounder, the Bulls’ 2025 first-rounder, and a lightly protected 2027 Celtics first-rounder.

They have no real bad contracts with Devonte Graham and Doug Mcdermott’s contracts expiring next offseason (Graham’s contract is non-guaranteed in 2024-25). They have some nice pieces in places with Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, and Malaki Branham. With all of these players are rookie deals or have affordable deals for the next couple of years.

NBA rumors: Spurs want a point guard leader

Adding a veteran point guard to this group could make this team a sneaky team to get out of the play-in tournament in year one. While this seems like a low bar, even Michael Jordan or LeBron James did not make the playoffs in year one.

The article further notes that the Spurs do not see Tre Jones as a long-term solution at point guard but Popovich wants to match offers for him this offseason (he is a restricted free agent). One could assume that the Spurs adding a player like Chris Paul or Fred VanVleet is their big move. Jones has demonstrated some strong potential and could be a solid backup benefiting as well from a veteran mentor.
