Must-have free agents for the Spurs: 2. Naz Reid

The Spurs will look to add a Big that can complement Victor Wembenyama. While someone like Brook Lopez is certainly a good candidate to pursue, the Spurs will likely need to overpay for a big who is on the wrong side of 30 and is likely to remain with the Bucks. A younger, cheaper, and more realistic option is Naz Reid.

Having played a backup role for most of his career, the Spurs can unearth a quality starter based on the flashes Reid has already shown. For example, the former LSU man has profiled as one of the best finishers and roll-men in the league ranking in the 99th percentile for Basketball Index’s ‘rim shot making’ metric and in the 96th percentile for ‘finishing talent’.

Unlike many good roll-men, Naz Reid’s scoring skillset goes beyond just the dunking spot. Reid has shown great touch and made 1.1 3s per game in just 18.4 minutes per game in 2022/23.

Despite being undersized, Reid has done well on the boards averaging 9.6 rebounds per 36 minutes including 2.1 offensive boards in 2022-23. With the Timberwolves committing significant money and minutes to Gobert and KAT and Reid clearly outperforming his current role and contract, the Spurs should pounce on the opportunity.
