Domingo Germán had an out-of-body experience against the lowly A’s, throwing a perfect game on Wednesday night, the fourth in Yankees history.

If you throw a perfect game in Oakland and (almost) no one is there to see it, did it actually happen? New York Yankees starter Domingo Germán would argue most definitely after his unreal effort on Wednesday night.

Despite entering the June 28 start with a 5.10 ERA on the season and being a general headache for the Yankees throughout the season, Germán was absolutely stellar in this monstrous moment. It wasn’t without some drama, though. After eight perfect innings and 93 pitches, the Yankees kept hitting to increase their already sizable lead, which seemed to cool the starter sitting in the dugout.

But once the inning finally ended, he came back out to the mound and, as he retired Esteury Ruiz for the final out, it was a celebration for New York in the soon-to-be-former home of the A’s with the fourth Yankees perfect game in franchise history and just the 24th perfect game in MLB history.

Germán tossing a perfect game now puts him alongside Don Larsen (1956), David Wells (1998) and David Cone (1999) as the only Yankee pitchers to record a perfect game. It’s also just the 13th no-hitter in franchise history as well, the most recent prior to Wednesday coming in 2021 with Corey Kluber on the hill.

This was also the first perfect game in over a decade for MLB. Seattle Mariners stalwart Felix Hernandez has thrown the last perfecto in the big leagues previously back in 2012. Now, it’s Germán who holds the title for the most recent perfect game.
