Breakout NFL candidates for 2023: Las Vegas Raiders – OJ Howard

This is a bad Las Vegas Raiders team. There are a number of players who could break out, mostly because there are seemingly weaknesses across the roster. Somehow, a team with one of the best wide receivers (DavanteAdams) and one of the best running backs (Josh Jacobs) is expected to be near the bottom of the standings. Let’s have a little fun with this pick since it will seemingly happen randomly.

O.J. Howard was supposed to be a star at the tight end position. He was a first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2017. Since then, he’s been up and down. Actually, it’s been mostly down. He signed with the Raiders this offseason to bring some competition to a heavy tight end room. There’s a possibility that Howard might not make the roster, but at the same time, he might be the starter.

With Darren Waller now in New Jersey, the Raiders have an opening for a superstar tight end. Howard can still ball, but he hasn’t found the right fit. He’s still just 28 years old; this is his last chance to avoid the “bust” moniker. The last time he had more than 200 yards, nobody had heard of the coronavirus, so it’s been a while.

The Raiders took Michael Mayer in the second round of the NFL Draft, but he might need a year to cook. Howard could fill that role for a season, and he could play incredibly well with Jimmy Garoppolo. The Raiders’ offense will need a lot of quick options since the offensive line isn’t great. This allows Howard to get open quickly and to have his best season since 2019.
