Brendan Donovan should be on the Cardinals trade block

Brendan Donovan was the first-ever winner of the NL Gold Glove Award for a utility player. Donovan is once again showing off his abilities to play anywhere Marmol wants him on the field.

He has played the corner outfield positions and all the infield bases. He’s played once at shortstop, where you would think he would be given more chances. He is a plus defender, no matter where he is on the field. And because he’s an excellent hitter, he’s been the team’s designated hitter a few times. Donovan was recently put on designated hitter duties because of soreness experienced when throwing.

This season Donovan is slashing .284/.369/.407 with an OPS of .777. He has 30 walks, seven doubles, nine home runs, four stolen bases, 37 runs scored, and 27 RBIs.

It would be devastating to see Donovan in anything other than a Cardinals uniform. But, when considering all that Donovan can do on the field, it’s worth thinking about. Donovan could be paired with another major league-ready talent to net some starting pitching or a power-hitting veteran outfielder.
