Steelers: Starting Broderick Jones should be obvious

Dan Moore Jr. seems like a nice guy, but by no means should he be the starting left tackle on this football team once the regular season starts.

The Steelers are doing the right thing by bringing along first-round pick Broderick Jones slowly, but at the end of the day, Pittsburgh selected him that early for a reason. Jones is a behemoth along the offensive line, and should protect Kenny Pickett’s blind side for years to come if this all works out.

In minicamp, Moore made Jones battle for reps. Per Mark Kaboly of The Athletic, Moore emerged that battle victorious. However, it’s tough to judge such a competition when neither party has pads on. The real war takes place in training camp.

“The Steelers always allow competition to play out, rarely do they name someone a starter just because of their tenure, paycheck, or draft status. It appears that Moore is going to make Jones fight for his spot on the roster,” Kaboly said.

Frankly, that’s exactly how it should be. By no means am I saying the Steelers should hand Jones the keys based on name recognition alone. However, it feels like only a matter of time before Jones takes over at left tackle permanently, and Moore Jr. finds a home somewhere else on the o-line or as the first man off the bench.

Moore is a valuable asset to have — he can play multiple positions on the offensive line. Jones, though, is viewed as the LT of the future, and should receive that opportunity sooner rather than later.
