The Chiefs want to give Patrick Mahomes another Super Bowl title this season, but these three weaknesses could derail Kansas City’s hopes.

The presence of a healthy Patrick Mahomes on the roster is enough to make the Chiefs a credible Super Bowl threat heading into the 2023 season. If Kansas City wants to give their star quarterback another title, they’ll need to keep a close eye on several potential roster holes.

The good news for Chiefs fans is that there’s a lot of star talent present. Mahomes is arguably the most valuable player in the NFL. Chris Jones is a superstar on the other side of the ball. Head coach Andy Reid and his staff also have proven their ability to get the best out of the talent available to them on a weekly basis.

That doesn’t mean the front office has done a perfect job of roster construction. These three roster weaknesses could prove fatal to the Chiefs’ hopes of repeating as Super Bowl champions.

3. No true No. 1 wide receiver

The issue of Kansas City’s wide receiver quality has been debated repeatedly ever since Tyreek Hill was traded to the Dolphins. It’s clearly an above-average group overall, but the lack of a bona fide No. 1 option is a weakness the Chiefs need to overcome in high-leverage situations.

The theory behind the team’s wide receiver room is that Mahomes can turn good receivers into great players. It’s hard to argue with that as a concept. That doesn’t change the reality that Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling all profile more favorably as No. 2 options than No. 1 receivers. Chiefs fans need to hope that Travis Kelce reprises his role as the team’s top pass-catcher in 2023. If not, opposing defenses may find a way to take advantage of the lack of star power in Kansas City’s receiver room.
