Saints training camp cuts: Nephi Sewell

The former Utah Utes standout received some playing time with New Orleans last season due to injuries in their linebacking core. However, with the return of D’Marco Jackson and addition of Anfernee Orji, is there really any need for the 24-year-old on the roster?

Sewell projects as a third or fourth string middle linebacker. To make the roster, he’ll have to win a position battle with Nick Anderson or Ty Summers. The losers of that battle could very well find themselves on the chopping block in the first few rounds of roster cuts.

Sewell finished his Utah career with 143 total tackles, 89 solo tackles, one forced fumble, two forced fumbles, three interceptions, and two pass breakups. He went undrafted, but has since found a brief home in New Orleans. Sewell was released but signed with the practice squad in the middle of last season. As previously mentioned, he eventually received a promotion to the roster due to injury concerns.

Even on a Saints defense that must improve from last season, it’s unlikely Sewell makes enough of a training camp impression to stay on the active roster.
