Red Sox rumors: Jorge Alfaro will lose his roster spot when Reese McGuire returns from IL

Out of all the moves on this list or in the Red Sox media, this one is the most obvious and makes the most sense. For the better part of the season, Connor Wong has handled the catching responsibilities for Boston. But any baseball fan knows just how important depth is at the catching position. The wear and tear of baseball is bad on any player’s body and mind, but that is just intensified for backstops.

The Red Sox have seen this firsthand as they have been missing their backup catcher for the last month with an oblique strain. This has resulted in Jorge Alfaro receiving the move to their backup catcher spot and he has been horrendous for the Red Sox. So far, he’s slashing .163/.217/.326 on the season, split between two teams. This upgrade is a no-brainer, and the upgrade will be coming to Boston shortly.

The most likely option is to return Reese McGuire from the injured list. McGuire is planned to start a rehab assignment on Tuesday and if all goes well, he’ll be back with the Red Sox in the near future. There is an outside chance that, if there’s an injury to Wong or a setback with McGuire, Boston pursues a catching option at the deadline. Only time will tell, but none of these options see Jorge Alfaro staying on the roster for more than another week or two.
