The Baltimore Orioles have their eyes set on an All-Star pitcher.

The Baltimore Orioles are at the top of the AL East standings at the time of this writing with an impressive 62-40 record. They are clear buyers at the trade deadline because of it, and the primary area that they will be focusing on is starting pitching. This is where they need the most improvement, and they reportedly have an interest in acquiring an All-Star starter because of it.

According to MLB Insider Jon Morosi, Baltimore is currently eyeing Detroit Tigers pitcher Michael Lorenzen. They have competition for his services, however, as the Tampa Bay Rays and Houston Astros have also been connected to him.

Michael Lorenzen would be a major addition to the Orioles’ rotation

There is no question that Baltimore would benefit from a Lorenzen addition immensely. The 31-year-old righty has put together an excellent 2023 season thus far, sporting a 5-7 record, 83 strikeouts, and a 3.58 ERA. He was also named to his first career All-Star game because of his strong stuff on the mound.

When looking at the Orioles’ current rotation, Lorezen would arguably become their top starter if acquired. At a minimum, he would work well in the front half of their rotation, and that is something that the Orioles desperately need to strengthen if they hope to go on a real run this fall.

The Tigers are likely expecting a good amount in return for Lorenzen, as he has been generating plenty of interest around the league. His All-Star label also heightens his trade value. The Orioles would likely need to part ways with at least two solid prospects to get this deal done because of this.

We will need to wait and see if the Orioles’ confirmed interest in Lorenzen leads to them winning the sweepstakes from here.
