Cardinals trade rumors: Don’t trade Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado

The St. Louis Cardinals are selling at the deadline, but fans were not expecting a fire sale. That’s why it was shocking for Cardinals fans to see rumors involving their superstars in third baseman Nolan Arenado and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

This past weekend, a Los Angeles Times report indicated that the Cardinals and Dodgers were discussing a potential trade centered around Arenado. Per Jorge Castillo, the Dodgers would acquire Arenado and either Jack Flaherty or Jordan Montgomery (prior to Texas Rangers trade), and that the Cardinals were looking at their young pitchers like Bobby Miller, Gavin Stone, Ryan Pepiot, and Emmet Sheehan in a potential deal. That, and St. Louis would have inherited one of or both of Max Muncy and Chris Taylor.

But, Cardinals president John Mozeliak said that they didn’t ask Arenado to waive his no-trade clause, and that they won’t be trading him.

Just when Cardinals fans thought they were done with reports of their star players getting dealt, there was yet another one just ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline.

According to Jake Mintz of FOX Sports, the Cardinals aren’t actively shopping Goldschmidt, they were still listening to teams that were inquiring about the first baseman.

While trading for Arenado and Goldschmidt would get gigantic returns for the Cardinals, that would also set the team back a couple of years. After all, you don’t just fall into a multi-time All-Star third baseman and a former NL MVP in Goldschmidt again. But, the Cardinals are hoping to get back into contention next year.
