MLB Rumors: Cardinals are optimistic for first time in awhile

St. Louis still has plenty to figure out in the interim, but for the first time in awhile, there is cause for optimism. John Mozeliak and his front office filled out the organization with pitching depth, trading the likes of Jack Flaherty, Paul DeJong, Jordan Montgomery and Jordan Hicks in the process.

Miles Mikolas, who is now the longest tenured Cardinal not named Adam Wainwright, feels a sense of optimism for the future.

“Whether it’s foolish or not, I think the mindset is to be super optimistic,” said Mikolas. “We got an incredibly talented ball club here. We have guys coming up that have tons of talent. We start putting things together getting on a roll here, things could change. Things could start working very well for us.”

Intended irony or not, Mikolas was wearing a ‘The Big Lebowski’ shirt with the line “Life Goes On, Man.” It appears he’s ready for the next chapter of St. Louis baseball. However, it’s unclear what that next chapter will look like.

Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt are almost certain to remain the core on the offensive side of the ball. The starting rotation leaves much to be desired right now, and Oli Marmol and Co. should spend the remainder of the season figuring out what they have in several of these new young arms. If it’s uninspiring, then expect the Cards to be active in the free agent and trade markets this offseason.
