Braves who weren’t traded but will be this offseason: Vaughn Grissom

Oh, what could have been with Vaughn Grissom and the Atlanta Braves. He’s quickly becoming what John Collins long was for the Hawks in town, a continual name brought up in trade talks, but somehow still sticking around.

Long thought to be the up-and-coming shortstop in the Braves organization and possible replacement for Dansby Swanson, Braden Shewmake now looks like he’ll fit the role and timeline a bit better.

Grissom’s age and potential still makes him a possible candidate to include in trades for win-now players, perhaps a left-field replacement for Eddie Rosario or an upgrade in the bullpen.

While one might view Grissom’s trade value as shot thanks to his struggles playing the shortstop position in the majors (he had six errors in 19 games this year at the position), a team that views him instead as a second baseman could find some juice to squeeze out of the prospect.

In the minors, his error rate has been lower at second base than shortstop and though the position was blocked by Ozzie Albies in Atlanta, other franchises may be looking to fill the role sooner, serving as ideal trade destinations to help Grissom get his career off the ground.

It’ll be somewhat bittersweet to see Grissom finally go. On one hand, he’ll probably get placed in an organization that can offer him more consistent playing time in the major leagues and a chance to stick in the majors. On the other hand, it’s a sign of things that just didn’t work out in Atlanta.
