Dak Prescott Should Be Favorite to Lead NFL in Passing Yardage
By Peter Dewey
Dak Prescott looked like he hadn’t missed a beat after suffering a season-ending ankle injury last season.
Oh, and what about his shoulder? It looked absolutely fine on Thursday Night Football, when Prescott threw the ball 58 times; completing 42 passes for 403 yards and three scores.
Dallas wasn’t able to upset the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, thanks to plenty of missed kicks by Greg Zuerlein and a questionable no-call on a Chris Godwin catch late in the fourth quarter, but Prescott was better than ever in the loss.
Thursday marked the fourth time that Prescott has thrown for over 400 yards since the start of the 2020 season, but he’s only played in six games (finishing five) in that time frame. Essentially, Prescott has thrown for 400 yards in four of his last five full games.
That’s nuts.
Prescott opened as the favorite to lead the NFL in passing yardage at WynnBET, but he was passed by Patrick Mahomes (+350) during the offseason. Dak was still second at +400 odds, but he should be the favorite after his Week 1 performance.
Prescott is in a pass-heavy offense with two elite receivers in Amari Cooper and CeeDee Lamb, and the Cowboys showed that Ezekiel Elliott could be an afterthought on offense at times this season.
Dallas’ defense still isn’t great despite forcing a bunch of turnovers on Thursday, which means Prescott is going to find himself in plenty of these shootout types of games this season. Remember, he was averaging 371.2 passing yards per game last season before getting hurt.
Unless Mahomes goes nuclear for a 400-yard game of his own (which is very possible), don’t be surprised if Prescott assumes the top spot on the odds list to lead the NFL in passing.
