Joe Burrow Deserves More Love in Latest MVP Odds
By Peter Dewey
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has led his team to a 4-2 start this season, and they've already matched last year’s win total, the highest under head coach Zac Taylor.
Burrow has been great, partly because of first-round pick and Offensive Rookie of the Year favorite Ja’Marr Chase, and he’s got a huge matchup with the Baltimore Ravens in Week 7. Cincy is a six-point underdog in the matchup, but it could be a great spot for Burrow to improve his odds to win MVP this season.
Burrow is a long shot to win the league’s most prestigious individual award, but he’s currently being a little undervalued. He sits at just +5000 odds to win MVP at WynnBET, but he’s having a really strong start to the season. To put Burrow’s odds in perspective, Teddy Bridgewater is +6000 to win MVP even though the Denver Broncos have lost three straight games.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft has thrown for 14 touchdowns in six games, after throwing just 13 scores in 10 games as a rookie.
On top of that, Burrow has been consistent, throwing for multiple scores in every game so far this season. It’s clear that he’s beginning to take the next step as a player, yet his MVP odds lag behind.
The path for Burrow to win MVP would likely occur if the Bengals win the AFC North and make the playoffs, and while that’s unlikely, Cincy is firmly in the race at 4-2 through the first six games.
The Bengals would jump to the No. 1 spot in the division with a win over the Ravens, and with Burrow’s improved play, and an improved defense, the Bengals look like a borderline playoff team for the first six weeks.
Burrow may not keep it up, but if he does he’s on pace to throw around 40 touchdowns this season. That’s MVP-caliber work, and at +5000 he is my favorite dark horse on the board.
