Josh Allen Passes Justin Herbert Moves Behind Patrick Mahomes in MVP Odds Standings

Justin Herbert’s run behind Patrick Mahomes in the second spot to win NFL MVP honors this season has come to an end.
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen passed Herbert on the odds list at WynnBET after Herbert (+1000) held the position for several weeks. Allen is now +900 to take home the MVP award.
While Herbert did have a standout rookie season, Allen is coming off a near MVP season in 2020 where he led the Bills to the AFC Championship Game.
The oddsmakers at WynnBET took a sizable bet on Herbert at 20/1 odds, warranting his move in the standings earlier this offseason, but when you look at MVP history, Allen makes a lot more sense for the award because of his team’s expected success.
The last eight MVP award winners have been quarterbacks, and seven of those eight times the quarterback led his team to at least the Conference Championship Game (only Lamar Jackson in 2019 did not complete this feat), with five of them making an appearance in the Super Bowl.
Herbert could have a fantastic season, but the Los Angeles Chargers have -160 odds to miss the postseason altogether in 2021, and they have to face Mahomes twice a year in the AFC West.
Even though Jackson didn’t lead the Ravens to the AFC title game in 2019, the Ravens made the playoffs and went 14-2 in the regular season, the best mark in the NFL.
Allen and the Bills are the favorites to win the AFC East for the second straight season, and they are third on the odds list to win the Super Bowl at +1000. If he can repeat last year’s line of 4,544 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions, Allen is a solid pick to win MVP this year.
The Bills quarterback has a huge arm and the unique ability to do damage as a runner, and as long as Buffalo experiences a lot of team success, Allen should reap the benefits.
