NFL Rumors: 5 teams that fit Mike Evans’ free agency demands
3. The Jets need a major WR2 upgrade and Mike Evans would be a perfect fit
To say that the New York Jets are trying to win now would be an understatement. They're as desperate as any team out there to try and not only make the playoffs for the first time since 2010, but win their first Super Bowl since the 1968 campaign. Adding Mike Evans would get them closer to achieving both goals.
The Jets looked like a team primed to compete this past season but an Aaron Rodgers injury in his first drive as a Jet immediately put an end to those plans. Rodgers is expected to be healthy for Week 1 of the 2024 season, meaning the Jets will be in win-now mode once again. For them to win, they need to fortify their receiver room.
Garrett Wilson has established himself as an elite wide receiver, but he's all the Jets have, really. Allen Lazard had the second-most yards among Jets wide receivers, and he had only 311 yards in 14 games played.
Pairing Davante Adams with Aaron Rodgers once again feels like New York's dream scenario, but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen. If Adams is off the table, Evans is the next-best target out there, and he'd cost nothing more than money.
The Jets have had a defense good enough to win the Super Bowl in each of the last two seasons. It's on the offense to improve for this team to get to where they want to go. Getting Rodgers back obviously helps a ton, but the Jets need to upgrade their offensive personnel, particularly at wide receiver. They can't do much better than Evans, and the Jets seemingly check every box he's looking for.
