Early in the afternoon Wednesday, a report surfaced that the New England Patriots were showing interest in veteran wide receiver Jason Avant.

Obviously that report was true.

According to Field Yates of ESPN Boston, Avant visited with the Patriots on Wednesday.

The Patriots made a big splash by agreeing to a deal with star cornerback Darrelle Revis on Wednesday night, but with Julian Edelman unsigned  (and with him signed for that matter) , the Patriots have a major need at wide receiver.

Avant was drafted with 109th overall pick in the fourth round of 2006 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. The former Michigan Wolverines spent all eight of his NFL seasons with the Eagles before being released last week.

Last season, Avant had 38 receptions for 447 yards and two touchdowns and added five more catches for 21 yards in the Eagles’ first round playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Avant has also visited with the Kansas City Chiefs while the Patriots have shown interest in Carolina Panthers’ wide receiver Brandon LaFell.
