The Dallas Cowboys’ 16th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft came up and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel was still on the board. Some Cowboys fans wanted Manziel and others didn’t. While many felt like Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones might not be able to resist drafting Manziel, he didn’t and selected Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin instead.

Apparently Jones even told current Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo that reports the Cowboys could take Manziel weren’t accurate, and that it was “highly unlikely” that they’d take Manziel.

From Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News:

"Jones told Romo that speculation of Dallas drafting the Heisman Trophy winner was “really a real unlikely thing.”"

After the first round, Jones elaborated saying no quarterback would come in and beat out Romo, and Martin being available made the decision easier.

“Theres no way any quarterback comes in here and beats out Tony Romo. The fact Martin was there mitigated any…thinking about going with Johnny,” Jones said, also via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.
