The wait on the development of the Dragon spacecraft, designed by SpaceX, will be coming to an end tonight.

SpaceX, the private spaceflight company, will be unveiling the manned version of its Dragon spacecraft.  The information was revealed through CEO Elon Musk.

Musk will reveal the design of the Dragon spacecraft tonight in an invite only event in Hawthorne, California at the company’s rocket factory facility.  The goal of the Dragon is to be able to fly astronauts to and from the International Space Station on behalf of NASA.

The Dragon V2, or Version 2, is designed in a gumdrop shape and is large enough to transport 7 astronauts to and from the International Space Station.  Since the end of NASA’s shuttle program, only the Russian Soyuz has been a vehicle capable of making trips to the space station.  The Soyuz is only large enough for a crew of three astronauts.

While SpaceX has had the Dragon unmanned capsule making trips to the International Space Station, the Version 2 is the first manned version to set out to make the trip.

NASA, in an attempt to have an astronaut Taxi ready by 2017, has provided some funding support to SpaceX for the Dragon.  Other companies looking to get in on the action have been Sierra Nevada with their Dreamchaser spacecraft and Boeing with their CST-100 spacecraft.
