New York Yankees shut down pitcher Michael Pineda after injury setback
By Bryan Rose
When the New York Yankees acquired Michael Pineda from the Seattle Mariners a few seasons ago, they certainly didn’t expect the then rookie phenom to turn into a walking injury.

But in the time since the trade which sent Jesus Montero to Seattle, Pineda has been consistently injured and unable to take the mound in pinstripes.
That changed this season as both the Yankees and Pineda were hopeful the former top prospect would return to his one time form, but not shockingly Pineda suffered yet another injury.
Initial tests suggested the injury wouldn’t be overly serious, but now after suffering a second setback, the Yankees have decided to shut down their young arm for at least ten days and possibly longer.
“Girardi said Pineda likely will be shut down at least 10 days before starting to throw again,” says Erik Boland. “Pineda said he is not worried long term.”
Injured since late April, while Pineda may not be worried about any long term issues, he’s already missed a month and given he’ll need more time and likely an extended rehab appearance he’ll miss at minimum two months.
Given his already questionable injury history, you have to be concerned that it’s more than just mild inflammation. But hopefully, he’s just taking a bit longer than expected to recover and he’ll be back to his normal self once he returns to the mound, whenever that might be.
