Think you’re a diehard fan of your favorite Major League Baseball team? Well, you, individually might be, but as a unit, you may be shocked who comes in as the biggest bandwagon fan bases in baseball.

More from Arizona Diamondbacks

Many may assume that larger market teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Yankees would top the list given their absurdly large fan bases, but that’s not the case, at least not according to a study from Emory University that analyzed consumer demands in baseball from 1998-2014. So who topped the list is at the most fickle fans?

The Philadelphia Phillies, oddly, as they beat out the Baltimore Orioles (No. 2), the Oakland A’s (No. 3), Chicago White Sox (No. 4) and the Detroit Tigers (No. 5) as the most bandwagon baseball fan bases.

It’s a little shocking to see those teams considering the vast majority either have a long history in the game or have producing winning teams in recent seasons.

So what about for the most loyal fans in baseball? The aforementioned New York Yankees apparently have the most dedicated fans in professional baseball, followed by the St. Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins, Boston Red Sox and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The fact that both the Marlins and Diamondbacks made the list is a little weird considering both struggle to bring in fan attendance, but the study was about much more than ticket sales and more about the difference in fan bases as opposed to winning/losing.

If you didn’t see your team listed, you can read the full study here.
