Utah quarterback Travis Wilson has been cleared to return to playing football for the Utes after he suffered a season-ending concussion that threatened to end his career last season.

Wilson was undergoing a concussion test last season with three games left on the schedule when the exam revealed an old injury to an intracranial artery which threatened to not only end the rising junior’s football career but impact his life away from the football field.

“I’m happy I’ve been cleared to play again,” said Wilson. “My condition is stable and the neurosurgeon predicted it will remain stable in the future. I had a feeling nothing would change from the previous scan, so I’ve been working to get back into shape. I feel totally comfortable about returning to football and full contact. I believe I’ve been playing with this condition for awhile and never even knew about it. I’m going to keep playing just the way I’ve always played. I knew something positive would come out of the whole thing.”

The 6-6, 240-pound 20-year-old signal-caller started seven games as a true freshman and as a sophomore, played in nine games, including the upset win over No. 5 Stanford. He completed 56 percent of his passes for 1,827 yards and 16 touchdowns and added 386 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Wilson had been cleared to participate in non-contact drills this spring, but now that he has received final clearance he will look to maintain his perch atop the Utes depth chart. He will compete primarily with Oklahoma transfer Kendal Thompson for the starting job.
