The Toronto Blue Jays have been in the market to trade for an infielder for quite some time, though that need became expedited when Brett Lawrie went down with a broken finger which is expected to keep him on the mend for 3 to 6 weeks.

Given that, the Blue Jays have reportedly been hitting the market hard and according to the Union-Tribune, are said to have interest in the San Diego Padres third baseman.

"At least one team – the Toronto Blue Jays – has discussed acquiring the Padres’ third baseman, multiple baseball sources have confirmed. Of particular interest this weekend to the Blue Jays and several teams that have checked on Headley’s availability – many of whom will watch him closely this weekend – is the herniated disc that required an epidural injection last week."

The oft-injured infielder is a few seasons removed from a near MVP campaign though has struggled to return to form in the years since, leaving many to believe his one-year wonder was more of a fluke occurrence. Still, a free agent at season end, the Padres would likely just be happy to move him which shouldn’t cost the Toronto Blue Jays much in terms of assets.

Headley’s also been trapped in a relatively poor offense in San Diego for the past few seasons so it remains to be seen what he could do in a much improved Toronto Blue Jays lineup, surrounded by the likes of Edwin Encarnation and Jose Bautista.

The Padres will likely do what they can to trade Chase Headley rather than get nothing for him at season end, so expect a few additional teams to show interest in the veteran.
