Alabama has the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation and in all likelihood will have the top class after national signing day, unless the Texas A&M Aggies pull off the upset, but the Crimson Tide’s No. 1 class could be enriched with the addition of a top safety who named them his leader on Tuesday.

Jamal Peters (Bassfield, Miss. Bassfield) released his top five schools and had a new leader. When the 6-3, 200-pound safety released his top 10 schools on May 24 he had the in-state Mississippi State Bulldogs and Florida State Seminoles occupying the top two spots with LSU and Alabama rounding out his top four schools.

His new top five had Alabama surpassing the in-state program as Mississippi State dropped to No. 2, Florida State at No. 3, Ole Miss at No. 4 and the Bayou Bengals rounding out the top 5.

Florida, Texas A&M, Louisville, Clemson and Southern Mississippi fell out of contention for the No. 3 safety recruit in the 247Sports Composite Rankings and the top player in the Magnolia State.

Alabama has routinely recruited the safety position as well as any other program in the country with Ha Ha Clinton-Dix the recent example after being taken in the first round in the 2014 NFL Draft and Landon Collins expected to join him in the ranks of the first rounder next year.

Alabama received the commitment of Laurence “Hootie” Jones last year out of Louisiana who was one of the top safety recruits last year and could have another one in Peters this year if they can maintain their lead.

Peters had 72 tackles, six sacks and one interception en route to earning All-State honors after helping guide Bassfield to a state title as a junior.
