Four years ago when LeBron James decided to make the move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat, there were a lot of people that believed he would finish his career on South Beach, even though they knew this day would come here in 2014 when he could become a free agent again, and that apparently included the Miami Heat.

According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, the Heat and team president Pat Riley were not prepared to make quite the recruiting pitch that they did to get James to come to Miami in the first place four years ago, and now they’re in trouble maybe because of that.

As it stands right now, the Heat look very close to losing James back to Cleveland, something that folks thought were impossible the past few years. The Heat are in a dogfight with the team they helped spurn four years ago, and this is something they were obviously unprepared to deal with.

More from LeBron James

It’s not just James, neither. There’s also a good chance that, should LeBron take off back to Cleveland, Chris Bosh will take the lucrative deal that was offered to him from the Houston Rockets, effectively killing the empire that Riley built four years ago.

Had they been better prepared to pitch LeBron, would things be different at the moment?
