Cornerback Nigel Bethel was dismissed from the Texas Tech football program in June after an incident in a pickup game where he punched Lady Raider basketball player Amber Battle. Now we have video of Bethel’s punch courtesy of EverythingLubbock.com.

In the surveillance camera footage, Battle can be seen boxing out Bethel for a rebound and a put back. Bethel evidently took exception with Battle’s fundamentally sound basketball skills and punched her in the face.

That punch got Bethel kicked off the team, but a grand jury later cleared him of being charged with a crime. Battle was given a one-month suspension for her part in the incident.

Bethel’s lawyer has alleged that Texas Tech wrongfully terminated his client’s scholarship as a result of the punch (via NFL.com):

"Nigel lost his scholarship in my opinion because of Texas Tech’s hasty decision. I don’t believe all the evidence was reviewed. I don’t believe they took the time out to properly investigate this. Nothing is OK about hitting a woman. Nothing is OK about hitting a man."

I don’t know what all the legal implications are here, if Bethel has grounds for a lawsuit against Texas Tech or what, but my two eyes tell me he was in the wrong in that video. Battle looks like she’s just bodying up against him and he gets all crazy and pushes her aside and then punches her.

If you don’t want a woman owning you at basketball, don’t get into a pickup game with a woman. It’s as simple as that, Nigel Bethel.
