During the early portions of the 2000’s, the Sacramento Kings were one of the NBA’s powerhouse teams. But then their previous ownership group lost oodles of money during the recession and that trickled down to the team who has now missed the playoffs for eight consecutive seasons.

However, with a new ownership group lead by Vivek Ranadive running the ship, things are slowly beginning to turn around for the Sacramento Kings. Next up? On-court results, which despite a change in ownership didn’t improve. That’s hopeful to change, at least according to head coach Michael Malone who expects improved results this season. In fact, it sounds as if he’s hoping to play a style of basketball similar to that of the San Antonio Spurs.

"Even before the end of last season, Kings coach Michael Malone spoke often about changing the team’s style of play.Malone wanted the Kings to play smarter and faster, move the ball and commit more to defense. That’s how the San Antonio Spurs won the 2014 NBA championship."

While it’s a fair sentiment the Sacramento Kings are one of 29 teams who are also interested in playing like the San Antonio Spurs. That said, the Kings do have a solid amount of talent on their roster, it’s simply a matter of harnessing it and growing.

They’re still likely to experience growing pains this season but it’s not outlandish to think they could compete for 40 wins, especially considering the team played .500 ball when their top three players (DeMarcus Cousins, Rudy Gay and Isaiah Thomas – even though he departed in free agency) were on the floor together.
