Foursquare moves on from check-in’s

Foursquare, whether or not you have ever used the technology, became famous virtually overnight for providing a social media experience that centered around bringing people together.

More from Technology

Whether it was on Facebook or Twitter, Foursquare was prevalent with friends and family members designating where exactly they were at.  Now, Foursquare is changing their strategy and moving on.

With checking in having become something that has been adopted by so many different avenues (Facebook and Twitter both have location type services of their own), Foursquare needed to reinvent itself.  How better to do that than with a new look and a new focus.

Foursquare let users know in May that the check-in feature would be phased out of the Foursquare experience, and rolled into a new app, Swarm.  Now, that transformation has come full circle, and Foursquare is focused on being a Yelp type application; a useful tool in helping users locate points of interest.

While Swarm and Foursquare work in conjunction seamlessly, allowing users to both check-in and locate their desired point of interest, the company wants the distinction known.

As Foursquare has changed its logo, a rebranding has taken place in hopes of differentiating what Foursquare once was, and allowing users to think differently in regards to what it is now.

At this point however, it may be too little too late for the once budding company.  Foursquare rose to monumental success relatively quickly, but the rebranding and new focus only puts them into a new market and from the bottom looking up.  With competition looming everywhere, it stands to reason that it will take more than a shiny new logo to make Foursquare relevant again.
