Report: Amazon prepping a credit card reader

Is Amazon preparing to release its own portable credit card reader? If a recent find by 9to5Mac is accurate, that may very well be the case.

More from Technology

According to a leaked Staples document obtained by the website, Amazon seems to be set on releasing a credit card reader this summer to directly compete with the Square card reader that many small businesses are using today.

The exact launch date wasn’t revealed, but the document states that the stores must wait until Tuesday, August 12 to put up signs advertising the device. That hint indicates that the release will come either on August 12, or just after the advertisements are posted.

The document also reveals that the device will cost $9.99.

None of this information has been confirmed by Amazon, and the company declined comment when FanSided reached out on the matter. Still, if a company like Staples has information of this nature, then it could be a positive sign that the leak is accurate.

If, and when, Amazon releases a comment on the leak, FanSided will be sure to bring it to you right here.

Mike’s Musings: Anything that creates competition in a market I am all for. If this card reader is legitimate, and that certainly seems to be the case, then Square will definitely have its work cut out for it. That being said, it already has a nice hold on the market, which should help it in battle.
