For some time, it looked like the conference’s newest power, the Baylor Bears, could be a legitimate National Championship contender. They mauled their competition early in the season, scoring 70 points in each of their first three games before taking down the Kansas State Wildcats 35-25 in their first road game. They continued to roll and after a 41-12 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners and a 63-34 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders, the Bears were ranked third in the country. However, in a road game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, the Bears suffered their first defeat. The Cowboys blew out the Bears 49-17, costing them any chance at a National Title. They ended the season with a 41-38 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs and a 30-10 victory over the Texas Longhorns to win the conference, but suffered another somewhat embarrassing defeat to end the season when they were defeated by the Central Florida Knights in the Fiesta Bowl 52-42.
The other team to play in a BCS Game was the Sooners. Prior to their loss to the Bears, they were defeated by the Longhorns 36-20 but those were their only two defeats. A season ending 33-24 victory over the rival Cowboys got them into the Sugar Bowl where they surprised many, taking down the Alabama Crimson Tide 45-31. That season-ending performance and the improvement of quarterback Trevor Knight has made them a trendy preaseason pick.
Our friends over at Bovada have started releasing their college conference odds and the Sooners are indeed the favorites to win the Big 12.
