Microsoft removes 1,000s of fake apps from Windows Store

Microsoft has long since been lagging behind Apple and Google when it comes to the app store supporting their products.  Today however, Microsoft has made a significant stride forward in cleaning up the Windows Store.  The company has removed over 1,500 fake applications from being offered.

In removing so many application, Microsoft has now also set new barriers for entry into the Windows Store.  There have been three new key changes in regards to apps passing certification requirements.  Apps need to be “clearly and accurately reflect the functionality of the app.”

Secondly, apps need to be categorized “according to the app function and purpose,” and finally, app icons must differentiate from that of other existing icons.

Most of the developers with applications currently available in the Windows Store have already agreed to the new requirements.  Some did not which has led to the removal of over 1,500 applications.

Should you have downloaded an app due to a misleading title or false description, Microsoft has said they will be refunding users money.  Microsoft is also working to speed up the application review process to alleviate issues for developers.  Conversely for users, if you find a problematic app, Microsoft urges you to report the issue.

It is definitely a significant stride towards offering a better experience in removing much of the clutter from the Windows Store.  While Microsoft’s products are not utilized through the Windows Store to the same extent of the iTunes App Store or Google Play, the changes should help the company as a whole.
