San Francisco 49ers sign holdout Alex Boone to contract extension

The San Francisco 49ers still have a vaulted defense though their offense has looked rather suspect during the preseason.

Of course, Jim Harbaugh and company have no reason to put on an offensive attack in what are essentially meaningless games, though concern regarding the San Francisco 49ers offensive line was well warranted considering how poorly they played.
Part of the reason behind that was the holdout from All-Pro guard Alex Boone who played hardball with the franchise throughout training camp. Refusing to budge, the 49ers finally caved and have reportedly agreed to sign him to a two-year extension.
It’s a move the San Francisco 49ers had to make as a weak offensive line would have spelled disaster for the 49ers offense this season. Granted, Alex Boone isn’t going to solve all problems though he’s certainly a force on the line and will improve both the 49ers run and pass protection. Stretched on salary cap space, San Francisco didn’t want to give in to Boone’s demands though it was pretty clear they planned to bring him back once they declined trade offers from multiple teams including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Undrafted out of Ohio State, Boone has quickly emerged as one of the better offensive lineman in the NFL. Contractual details, outside of the new two-year agreement, have yet to be announced though San Francisco will not be allowed to use the franchise tag on the guard once his extension is up.
Update: According to Ian Rapoport, Boone’s contract could be worth $8 million.
