Arizona Diamondbacks

It doesn’t really seem like anyone knows exactly why the Arizona Diamondbacks have done so poorly this season. The team started the season off going 8-22 in April.

Of course they did lose their ace Patrick Corbin to season ending Tommy John surgery prior to the start of the season but so did quite a few other clubs who have managed to pull through.

They signed aging but still solid starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo, 37, after Corbin went down but he too ended up needing to undergo Tommy John surgery mid-season. It was the first time in his career he’d ever had to go on the disabled list.

Otherwise the team just didn’t seem to be playing to their potential. Veteran Eric Chavez, who recently retired before the end of the season said in April,

"“I’ve never seen anything like it, to be honest with you. I’ve been on teams that weren’t very good, but at least I felt like we were competitive. So it’s a bitter pill to swallow. I can feel it in here tonight. It’s something I haven’t felt before. It’s getting tougher. It really is.”"

Since then though the Diamondback’s have brought in Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa to be the Chief of Baseball Officer, a position above the general manager created specifically for him. They have also fired general manager Kevin Towers.

With La Russa, a new GM and a group of healthy players led by Corbin and one of the National League’s best players first baseman Paul Goldschmidt back in 2015 the Diamondbacks have the chance to be competitive once again in the N.L. West.
