The Arizona State Sun devils were well on their way to a 3-0 start but then disaster struck as quarterback Taylor Kelly was injured and appeared on crutches with his foot in a boot.

More from College Football

Kelly was 13-of-21 with 193 yards and three touchdowns and added 70 yards on six carries, including a 50-yard touchdown in the third quarter to make it a 34-17 game and.

But then Kelly scrambled on third-and-seven with a little more than two minutes remaining in the quarter and after he was tackled short of the first down went to the locker room to evaluate the injury.

Kelly emerged with the right foot in a large protective boot and his body language and somber look on his face resulted in a very emotional Kelly that was near tears.

The severity of the injury or how long Kelly potentially could be out of the lineup are unknown at the time of publishing but based on the mood on the Sun Devil sideline, this could be a season-altering type of injury for Todd Graham’s team that had Pac-12 title hopes.

Arizona State next plays on September 25 on a Thursday night when they host undefeated UCLA Bruins.

Whether they have the Kelly under center for that game remains to be seen.

Kelly threw for 2,635 yards and 28 touchdowns last year as he was named to the Pac-12 second team after leading the team to the Pac-12 Championship Game.
