While there is a proverbial light at the end of the tunnel for New York Knicks fans, it’s obvious that the upcoming 2014-15 season will be one of transition.

More from NBA

With Carmelo Anthony locked up long-term the Knicks have their needed and desired franchise star, but little else. Thankfully that’s set to change given the expiring contracts of both Amare Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani. Between the two, the New York Knicks will be able to clear nearly $35 million dollars in cap space and look ready to spend.

Sadly, that’s not going to happen until the offseason rolls around and it’s the belief of Basketball Insiders that the New York Knicks’ best case scenario this season is finishing with a .500 record at 41-41.

"Best Case41-41The Knicks’ offense emerges as one of the league’s best. Anthony repeats last year’s performance, and Stoudemire proves able to play 30 minutes a night. Bargnani rediscovers his outside touch, and the ‘Bockers simply outscore enough teams to sneak into the lower end of the East bracket. Aldrich emerges to provide some modicum of rim-protection, while Early and Acy allow New York to get younger and more athletic. The squad avoids the bottom five in defense."

If there’s a silver lining to a .500 record, it’s that in the Eastern Conference that should be good enough to get you a playoff spot.

A 41-41 record would have given the New York Knicks the eighth seed in the 2013-14 playoffs and two additional wins would have pushed them to seventh. Add in the Indiana Pacers are likely to struggle this season and it’s very possible the Knicks may be playing in May even if they can’t crack a winning record.
