Florida State’s Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Jameis Winston found himself in hot water after yelling some explicit things in the student union. Florida State Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher responded by suspending Winston for a half, against a Top 25 team in Clemson no less.

Fisher tried to elaborate on the process of punishing players, saying it isn’t so much about punishing but modifying their behavior for the better. Pretty interesting and the right way to approach it.

“The only guideline I have: If that was my son, what would I do?” Fisher said, via 247 Sports. “The first thing everyone wants you to do is kick them off, get rid of them, throw them away. If that was your kid, is that what you would do? You can’t. I was whipped when I was a kid. I was whipped hard, but only for good reason, and told why. I was disciplined. As a coach, you have to stand up and say we can’t run (them off). You have to educate and teach.

“Everything we do, I try to do, based on if he was my son, what would I do? The object isn’t to punish them. It’s to change their behavior. We can punish easily, but does the punishment change behavior? … In silly mistakes like this, there’s no doubt (he hasn’t learned). So we have to continue to educate and find another way to do it. Maybe this punishment will do that. We’ll find out and continue to grow, and hopefully no more will happen. If they do, we have to make decisions based off of those.”
