Danny Woodhead is out for the rest of the season after the San Diego Chargers running back broke his fibula in the team’s win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Woodhead injured his fibular and right ankle during the Chargers opening drive against the Bills when he was tackled on his first carry of the game that went for one yard. Woodhead laid on the field for several moments before he was carted to the locker room and did not return in the 22-10 win.

The team was already playing without starting running back Ryan Matthews who is expected to miss about four weeks with a sprained MCL and now the team will have to go with former Indianapolis Colts running back Donald Brown as the team’s starting running back.

Woodhead had 15 carries this year for 38 yards and five receptions for 34 yards in his abbreviated season.

“You hate it for him first,” Philip Rivers said. “Obviously, it’s going to hurt us. But you hate it for him. He’ll get through it. It’s tough, I know, early like this to get hurt like that. We’ll miss him, but guys will step up. You don’t want anybody to get hurt. We’d be disappointed if anybody got hurt. But it just adds to the fact that you know a guy who loves it that much, cares about it that much, and goes down on his first snap.”

The Chargers will have their depth tested in the backfield with Brown getting a larger workload until Matthews returns from his injury in October and Branden Oliver serving as his backup.
