Once the man who recorded the final out of the World Series for the San Francisco Giants, Sergio Romo has had a rough go of things this season.

Romo was removed from the closer’s role earlier this season because of simple ineffectiveness. Those struggles are reflected in the numbers for Romo this season: he has a 3.91 ERA in 55 innings this season, more than a run higher than his 2.54 ERA last season.

Because Romo does not overwhelm opposing hitters with his velocity, he has to rely on location and deception to setup his best pitch, a wipeout slider. That is a non-traditional formula for a closer, one that stopped working this season.

One imagines that has the potential to create unrest for Romo, though there were no indications that he was creating issues. Such a problem might have come about Monday night, however, as Romo reportedly got into a shouting match with coach Shawon Dunston as the team prepared for their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

According to Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area:

"Multiple sources confirmed that right-hander Sergio Romo and coach Shawon Dunston exchanged heated words with raised voices, causing Bruce Bochy to emerge from his office to intervene. The air was cleared – as was the clubhouse – and the Giants suddenly moved up their pregame stretch time by more than a half-hour."

There might be nothing to see here, but with the Giants playing a huge series against the Giants and preparing for the playoffs, any tension that involves a pitcher as important as Romo is less than ideal.
