The LSU Tigers fell from the ranks of the unbeaten and outside the top 10 after they lost to the Mississippi State Bulldogs for the first time since 1999 and the first time in Tiger Stadium since 1991 and in the process may have encountered a quarterback controversy between Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris.

Harris replaced Jennings at quarterback late in the fourth quarter and threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns to fellow true freshman Malachi Dupre on 6-of-9 passing to give LSU a chance in the final minute after trailing 34-10 earlier in the fourth quarter.

“I like Brandon Harris coming off the bench and played extremely hard,” Les Miles said on Monday, via The Advocate. “I enjoyed Brandon Harris coming into the game. I enjoyed the fact that he gave us a tremendous lift. He came in to a position that was very difficult and we said to him make some deep throws and use your arm and your feet and let’s go win this game.”

Harris showed off his strong arm which is clearly stronger and more accurate than Jennings despite the latter having success with the deep ball in his brief tenure at LSU with wide receiver Travin Dural.

So could Harris be the team’s starting quarterback when LSU hosts New Mexico State on Saturday night to get him prepared for the road game vs the Auburn Tigers on Oct. 4?

“He’s earned more playing time without question and he deserves more consideration at quarterback. Practice weeks are very revealing and when there’s a separation there that will be noticed and changes will be made. We’ll play the guy that gives us the best chance at victory.”

Miles was cryptic in his response but reading between the lines it sounds like Harris will play much more and much sooner in Saturday’s game against New Mexico State with a decision on the starter to be made based on how he looks in his extended action against the Aggies.
