Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah: Jameis Winston ‘has a long way to go’ in maturity
Ameer Abdullah hopes to do what his friend Jameis Winston did last year when he won the Heisman Trophy, but the Nebraska Cornhuskers star running back thinks last year’s Heisman winner and national champion needs to grow up.

Winston’s admitted selfish actions nearly cost the Florida State Seminoles a chance at the national championship after the Seminoles needed overtime and a number of mistakes from the Clemson Tigers to win in overtime and remain the No. 1 team in the nation.
”You should see yourself as a young guy but hold yourself to a higher level of maturity,” Abdullah said. ”Definitely he has a long way to go.”
His vulgar comments last week prompted Florida State to initially suspend him for the first half before changing course and suspending him for the entire game late Friday night and Abdullah thinks Winston needs to think before he acts and realize there are consequences to his decisions.
Consequences that not only affect him but also his teammates, coaches, university and the thousands of fans who wear his jersey and cheer for him on Saturday’s.
"”It’s kind of hard for me to understand what’s going on with him right now, but from a general standpoint it’s the maturity level,” Abdullah said Monday. ”Think before you act. Understand the bigger picture. Everything that you do, say or how you present yourself can have dire consequences. That’s something I feel like he definitely needs to assess more.”"
Winston will be back under center for the Seminoles moving forward — barring any more off-the-field incidents — but he has a long ways to go as far as maturity is concerned and Abdullah is worried it could affect his future.
”He’s a very intelligent young man,” he said. ”But he’s made his fair share of mistakes. It gets to the point where you feel like he needs to start understanding and take things more seriously because these things can alter what happens in his future.”
Winston has the talent to be a future No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft, but teams have the right to be concerned about his string of off-the-field incidents which has prompted at least one NFL scout to call him a “fraud” and have Mel Kiper drop him from No. 3 to No. 25 on his big board.
