The Cleveland Indians will technically play the Kansas City Royals twice on Monday. Granted, the first game is the resumption of a postponed August 31st game that is in the bottom of the 10th inning. Still, as far as the American League standings are concerned, two games will be put in the books on Monday.

Of the teams that technically have not been eliminated but have a slim chance of reaching the playoffs, the Indians look to be the one that poses the biggest threat. They get to play the Royals heads up at home for three games, along with the conclusion of the aforementioned game in which they have a 4-2 lead in the 10th, and then finish the season hosting the Tampa Bay Rays for three games.

Cleveland still needs a lot of things to go right and they need to catch some breaks, but if they find a way to sweep the Royals it could make things very interesting entering the final weekend of the season as far as that second Wild Card spot is concerned.

The Indians reached the postseason under manager Terry Francona last season; they will look to repeat that accomplishment by pulling off the improbable, with a lot of help, during the final week of the 2014 season.

Cleveland enters Monday’s action 3.5 games back of the second Wild Card spot in the American League.
