The NHL season is set to start in a few weeks but already teams are starting to feel the pain of the regular season. the Carolina Hurricanes fall under this category as they’ve already lost one of their top players before the season can even start.

More from Carolina Hurricanes

In the third period of Carolina’s preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres, center Jordan Staal suffered a broken leg that is going to now keep him out for most of the season, if not all of it. The team confirmed the injury after the game, stating that a timetable for his recovery isn’t yet known.

"Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, tonight announced that center Jordan Staal suffered a broken bone in the lower portion of his right leg during the team’s preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres."

Here’s a look at the injury that will claim most of Staal’s 2014-15 seaosn with the Canes.

It’s a gruesome injury for the Hurricanes, as they now have to enter the season without one of their major star players and a top-line center. There was a lot of hope for the Hurricanes this year as they have a new head coach and a bright future ahead of them, but the injury to Staal is hardly the way they wanted to start the season out as the odds are now already stacked against them for the time being.
